Valve Adjustments
Valve adjustments are the job everyone skips, and the one that kills top ends.
Every unit Triumph twin loses valve clearance over time. 500 or 650, T100 or Bonneville, doesn't matter. Nothing is broken when it happens. It's how the engine is built. Steel pushrods, aluminum cases, a rocker box bolted to a head that heats and cools every time you ride. All of it moves at a different rate. The clearance you set on a cold Sunday morning is not the clearance you have at 65 twenty minutes later, and it's nothing like the clearance you'll have in six months.
Most owners never check them. The ones who do check once and figure the job is done. Both end up in the same place.
The bike will tell you
Won't idle? Runs rough down low? Feels lazy in a way you can't quite point at? Check the tappets first. We see this constantly. It's far and away the most common reason a bike shows up here running badly, and it's the cheapest thing on the list to fix.
Valves out of adjustment steal power. The bike doesn't die, it just gets worse in ways that are easy to blame on carbs or ignition. People chase jetting for weeks on a bike that needed fifteen minutes and a feeler gauge.
If you're losing compression, look at the valves before you start talking about rings. A tight valve isn't sealing, and a valve that isn't sealing reads on a compression gauge like a worn top end. Do a wet test and you'll know which one you've got.
After a top end, check them again
This one catches people. Fresh top end, new valves, cut seats, reground faces, and all of it still bedding in. The first few hundred miles are when clearances move the most, and they move tight. Finding tight valves after a rebuild doesn't mean somebody did the job wrong. It means the engine is doing what it's supposed to do.
Check a couple hundred miles after the motor goes back together, then again around 500. Skip it and you can burn a brand new exhaust valve on an engine you just paid to rebuild.
Why the gap closes
Valve seats wear. Every time a valve closes it seats a hair deeper into the head. Hundreds of miles of that adds up, and as the seat recedes the valve sits closer to the rocker, which closes the clearance. Tight clearance means the valve never fully seals at the top of its stroke. It can't dump its heat into the seat, so it runs hot, and now you're pulling a head instead of turning an adjuster.
Rocker gear and pushrod wear can open the gap up instead, but seat recession is the main driver and it always tightens. That's the direction to watch.
Cold, always cold
Fully cold. Not "it's been sitting twenty minutes." Aluminum sheds heat faster than the steel valve train, so if you adjust a warm head you'll set clearances that are wrong the second the engine comes up to temp. Every spec published for these engines assumes the bike is at room temperature.
Rotate the engine until the cylinder you're working on is at TDC on the compression stroke. Both valves closed, visible play at the rockers. Working the wrong stroke is the most common mistake we see, and it's an easy one to make, because the crank hits TDC twice per cycle and only one of them is the one you want.
The feeler gauge
The gauge should slide with a slight drag. Not floating, not jammed. Most people set them too tight, because a snug fit feels like it must be correct. If you have to push the gauge through, you're already out of spec. You want to feel it touching both surfaces without forcing it. If it drops through with no resistance at all, snug the adjuster up.
Do your final check with the locknut tight. Torquing that nut will move the setting a few thou if you aren't holding the adjuster still while you do it.
Exhaust side matters more
If you're only going to be careful about one thing, be careful about the exhaust. Exhaust valves run much hotter than intake, and a tight exhaust clearance is what burns a seat or holds a valve off its seat under load. An intake a little off spec is forgiving. An exhaust a little tight is not.
How often
Ridden regularly, meaning real miles and not driveway idling, check every 1,500 to 2,000. That's not a scare number. It's roughly how long seat recession takes to move the gap enough to matter on these engines. A bike that sits most of the year can go longer between checks, but the first ride of the season is when you check them, not when you skip them because it ran fine last October.
Tappets take fifteen minutes and a feeler gauge. A burnt valve takes the head off the bike.
